At the club’s Presentation Dinner & Dance on Saturday 17th November, Club Captain Steve Wynn awarded the Player of the Year trophy to Tom Reader. Congratulations to Tom – a well deserved award! Many thanks to those members who supported the event. An enjoyable evening was had by all.
Two more successful events were held in October. The final Friday social tennis/supper night of the year took place and after a few sets of tennis, 25 members enjoyed fish & chips in the clubhouse.
A week later, 40 people attended Bez’s multi media quiz night. Very well done to the winning team – the Weingarten family. Thanks to quizmaster Bez for an entertaining evening and to Andy for looking after the bar.
Don’t forget the final two events of the year – Presentation Dinner & Dance on Saturday 17th November and Christmas Celebration on Friday 7th December.
A rather wet afternoon for our American Tournament with play abandoned after 4 rounds in favour of tea & cakes! Winners of the Beresford Marshall Memorial Trophy this time were Gill Sanderson and Graham Boosey. Thanks to all those who came to play despite the weather, and to Steve for organising the tournament and making tea!
Congratulations to our Mens team who won the L&W Summer Jubilee Cup beating Rayleigh in the final by a set! Well played to both our pairs, Anthony Weingarten & Nick Spillet and Alex Goldhawk & Angus Hanney.
Well done to club members who reached the finals of the L&W Summer Tournaments. There were also wins for Paul Moffat & Rowland Swain in the Mens Vets Plate and Lloyd Burton in the Mens Singles Plate. Commiserations to runners up Gill Sanderson & Nick Spillett in the Mixed Open Doubles.
An excellent day’s tennis when the finals of our 2018 Club Championships were played. Well done to all competitors, both winners and runners up. A special mention for Sarah Ball and Cally Flinders who each won three titles, plus Geoff Spillett and Graham Boosey who each won two titles. Commiserations to Andrea Spillett who unfortunately was unable to play on the day in the Mixed Family Doubles final.
Photos from finals day can be seen on our Facebook page (no account required to view).
Thanks to club captain, Steve, for organising this year’s tournaments and finals day so efficiently as usual. And many thanks to the ladies who ensured refreshments were available all day – Wendy, Sandra and Marion, with help from Irene and Jane. Very much appreciated by both players and spectators!
Another successful social event with 24 players in a “Tiebreak Tens” tournament followed by a BBQ. Everyone played 9 championship tiebreaks in all with different partners/opponents in mens, ladies and mixed doubles. Congratulations to ladies winner Claire Elliott and runner up Deb Saund, and mens winner Dave Lambe and runner up Aaron Hilsum. Thanks to all those who played, watched or came for the bbq afterwards.
Congratulations to club member Anthony Weingarten in the last tournament of the summer holidays, the Essex County Closed. Anthony won the 16 & Under Boys Singles event, beating the top seed Daniel Chamoun in the final 7-5, 6-4. In addition, Anthony won the 16 & Under Boys Doubles with partner Ben Rowe, and was runner up in the 18 & Under Boys Singles. An excellent week for Anthony – well played!
Another two Tennis for Kids courses come to an end and Graham presents all participants with certificates. This is an LTA backed initiative with a course of 6 one hour lessons costing £25 and anyone signing up receives a racket, balls and a personalised t-shirt. Groups are for 4-7 year olds and 8-11 year olds. More courses start in September details online
Club member Sarah Ball took part in the Racketlon World Championships in Zurich this week playing squash, table tennis, badminton and tennis against each of her opponents in the Womens +50 competition. Sarah won one of her three matches and in each of her other two matches, she won two of the four sports played and finished in 3rd place overall. Against the eventual winner, Sarah lost by just a single point across the four sports. A great achievement for Sarah – third in the world and unbeaten at tennis – very well done!
A great week for Aaron Hilsum in the Road to Wimbledon Finals 2018. Aaron played in the County Under 14 Boys Singles which started as a round robin event from which he progressed to the knockout stage of the competition. After winning his first match in the knockout draw, Aaron then unfortunately lost in a very hard fought match 6-3, 7-6. However, this was in the last 16 which was a fantastic achievement for Aaron who represented both Westcliff Lawn and Essex admirably. Congratulations!
